- To Taste: Athonite lentil soup, fish with lemon sauce, roasted eggplant salad, sourdough bread, locally produced honey and olive oil. Monastic wines are a pleasant surprise.
Practical Information
When to Go
Spring and autumn for mild temperatures and friendly trails. Summer is hot and more crowded. Winter offers peace but more difficult paths. Check the patronal feast days and major holidays when demand skyrockets.
Access and Documents
Entry only based on a Diamonitirion, for men. Limited spots daily. Pro Travel assists you in obtaining the permit and confirming accommodation on the Holy Mount Athos. Exclusive access by sea from Ouranoupoli, by ferry to the Dochiariu Monastery then by bus to Karyes.
Money and Payments
Cash in euros is used on Athos, but in the shops of Kareia, payments can be made using a card at POS terminals. There is one ATM in Kareia.
Local Transport

Safety and Health
A very safe destination, but on mountainous terrain. Medical insurance is recommended. Respect the monks' instructions and the gate schedule, as monastery gates close during the night.
